On June 21, 2007, a new type of crime show debuted on the CNBC network in the United States. The first episode detailed the story of Barry Hunt, a con artist who lured investors into putting money into his start-up business. More than 50 people invested about $2 million. In reality, Hunt was operating a classic Ponzi scheme, which means that he was paying off old investors with new investors’ money. Eventually, Hunt was arrested and sent to prison. Another case told about the daring heist of two paintings painted by famed American artist Maxfield Parrish. Thieves cut through the roof of a Hollywood gallery, disabled the alarm system, and stole paintings worth $4 million. That crime has never been solved.

This new crime show was given the appropriate name American Greed: Scams, Scoundrels and Scandals, or simply American Greed. The show examines the dark side of the American Dream, and it attracts so many viewers that it has now featured more than 200 episodes. The program focuses on the stories behind some of the biggest white-collar crimes in recent US history. In one case, a San Francisco entrepreneur named Samuel Cohen started an Internet music company and convinced celebrities, investors, and even a charity to invest $31 million, with the promise that his company would soon be sold to Microsoft. However, no deal existed, and Cohen was convicted of fraud and sentenced to 22 years in prison.

One of the more interesting scams that has been considered on the program concerns Italian con artist Raffaello Follieri. He convinced investors to give him millions of dollars in a real estate scheme that never materialized. He was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison, and when he was released in 2012, he was immediately deported to Italy. Follieri not only managed to deceive some rich investors; he also deceived the beautiful actress Anne Hathaway into becoming his girlfriend during a four-year courtship, which ended when his scam was exposed.
